Smith Wesson Model 41 Serial Number Date Of Manufacture

A friend and I each have a Smith & Wesson 6' revolver. Mine is a 686+, and his is a Model 66, both are.357 Magnum, of course. We're both curious as to when they were made.

His is obviously older, as it is a square butt with an external firing pin (is that the correct term?). Mine is newer, with a round butt, with an internal firing pin, but I know it was made before the trigger lock was made. We tried some internet searches for websites that had manufacture dates, but couldn't find any. If I post the serial numbers, can anyone help us, or do we have to contact and pay S&W for the info.
